Our report on the ARM-Event 2014 conference

October 29, 2014 – Moscow hosted the annual ARM-Event conference for electronics design engineers. By tradition, this event was organized by Texas Instruments and MT-System, an electronic components supplier.

October 29, 2014 – Moscow hosted the annual ARM-Event conference for electronics design engineers. By tradition, this event was organized by Texas Instruments and MT-System, an electronic components supplier.

The program of ARM-Event 2014 included presentations on new high-performance processors by TI, ecosystem LaunchPad and BoosterPack, RTOS QNX applications, power supplies, etc. Also, there were two workshops for hardware engineers.

Our company was represented by Ivan Kuten, he spoke on "The hardware platform based on the DM6467 processor for video surveillance systems." There were also a  demo stand with the hardware and software platforms developed by Promwad's experts: processor modules, a slim client and other projects.

Promwad joins the СUC Club at the Russian Skolkovo Technopark

July 10, 2014 - The Hypercube at the Skolkovo innovation park near Moscow hosted the first forum of the Collective Use Centers (СUC) uniting key suppliers of technology services in Russia. This conference was attended by Ivan Kuten, a technical expert of Promwad, who is engaged in development of our cooperation with residents of this Technopark.

July 10, 2014 - The Hypercube at the Skolkovo innovation park near Moscow hosted the first forum of the Collective Use Centers (СUC) uniting key suppliers of technology services in Russia. This conference was attended by Ivan Kuten, a technical expert of Promwad, who is engaged in development of our cooperation with residents of this Technopark.

The forum attracted about 200 participants, including management of Skolkovo, the СUC representatives, their potential customers, as well as development institutions, which combine elements of the СUC ecosystem. The meeting discussed the challenges and opportunities for development of various technology services, as well as prospects for the CUC community at Skolkovo. As a result, participants of this forum agreed to establish a club under the auspices of the Technopark, signed a protocol and handed certificates to all the CUC member companies.

The author of this industry review is Roman Pakholkov, the founder and CEO of Promwad. He told about the emergence of the first contract developers and electronics design houses in Russia and the CIS; explained how to shorten the development cycle and reduce the costs of new electronic devices; and answered an important question about how to make a product competitive in the electronics market. Roman also touched on one of the most topical issues of intellectual property protection, explaining how to prevent the leakage of information when delegating certain tasks or the entire project to outsource.

Promwad sponsors the largest amateur marathon in Belarus

The 2014 Naliboki amateur marathon took place on Saturday, 24 May 2014. It attracted more than 1,100 participants from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Italy and Moldova. Our company supported this noncommercial event for all the people who prefers healthy active lifestyle.

The 2014 Naliboki amateur marathon took place on Saturday, 24 May 2014. It attracted more than 1,100 participants from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Italy and Moldova. Our company supported this noncommercial event for all the people who prefers healthy active lifestyle.

This year the Naliboki organizers have developed new routes for marathoners with any level of sports training, from beginners to professionals. They presented distances for runners (40–85 km), cyclers (40–200 km), the water route for kayaking (50–90 km), as well as complex multi-sport marathon (160 km) that included all these disciplines and additional technical steps.

Mobile technologies for the real estate market: trends, opportunities, benefits

October 31, 2013 – Minsk, Belarus hosted the "Real Estate and the Internet 2013" conference, organized for managers of real estate agencies, marketing professionals, representatives of construction companies and other market players. Our company took part in this event. Sergei Gimburg, the head of our Promwad Mobile business unit, presented his report "Mobile trends in mobile business".

Sergei showed the recent data on the use of mobile devices that proves the rapid growth of smartphones and tablets sales, as well as demonstrates that the majority of Internet activities begins with a smartphone. Information search, internet surfing, online shopping, social networking – more than 50 % of users begin all these activities using their mobile phones, and then continue them on personal computers. Another trend is growth of the market share of the Android operating system, which have reached 67 % this year, according to Strategy Analytics.

Mobile gadgets development, platform solutions and exchange of experience — the results of ARM Event 2013

The following exhibits were of particular interest to our visitors:

  • Processor modules, including the DM3730 system-on-module based on the TI processor in SODIMM- 200 form factor for multimedia applications. As it turned out, a lot of engineers use in their projects similar modules by Variscite, but they are looking for more reliable suppliers in terms of quality and technical supports.
  • SDR platform. A universal hardware solution by Promwad with an open architecture for rapid development of wireless communication systems based on SDR technology with the ability to support up to 15 communication standards. An additional advantage of the platform is the broad scope of applications, from video monitoring to Smart Grids and RFID.

Our presentation "Gadgets for smartphones" draw the affective sympathies of spectators. It was dedicated to a variety of devices for mobile phones, such as glucose meters (or glucometers), radiation monitors, moisture meters, radiometers, compact nitrate meters, adapters for medical devices, etc. The report described the main requirements to this kind of gadgets, their technical features and examples of Promwad developments in this sphere, such as Lapka (a set of sensors for iPhone) and DO-RA (portable dosimeter-radiometer).

Our client receives a grant from Skolkovo in the amount of $697,500

October 10, 2013 — The Skolkovo Fund approved the issuance of a grant in the amount of 22.5 Russian rubles (about $697,500) for Intersoft Eurasia for the development of a prototype of the domestic dosimeter-radiometer based on a solid-state silicon sensor — DO-RA.Si. This new device will be cross platformed, with support for inductive charging, and the wireless Bluetooth Low Energy / NFC protocols.

The first products of the Intersoft Eurasia company (Russia) were innovations for smartphones running iOS and Android — miniature sensors DO-RA.Classic и DO-RA.uni to measure radiation; they were connecting to mobile devices to use their energy resources and display the measurements results on the interface of special applications.

The Promwad’s experts were directly involved in the this project in 2011—2013, they developed the design and structure of enclosures for the line of DO-RA products, as well as they prepared the design documentation to launch mass production in Russia, South Korea, China, Malaysia and Taiwan (in compliance with international standards and  availability of components).

Our customer, Intersoft Eurasia, has received 24 patents and licenses in Russia, as well as the first international patent in Ukraine. The company’s patents in the United States, China, Japan and the European Union are in the final stage of their preparation. The next goal is the search for partners to launch mass production of the DO-RA devices and organization of their sales on the world market.

Promwad introduces a new training course for students of the BSU

The Promwad's experts have developed the next training course for the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Belarusian State University (BSU). This is a series of practical training workshops “The image recognition software for embedded systems based on OS Linux”.

The Promwad's experts have developed the next training course for the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Belarusian State University (BSU). This is a series of practical training workshops “The image recognition software for embedded systems based on OS Linux”.

During the 4th year of study, students will develop their open source software for license plate detection based on devices running Embedded Linux. The plan of lesson includes the following topics:

  • The development process and roles of its participants: developers, architects, etc.
  • Unit testing. Test-driven development (TDD)
  • Video capture, license plate character segmentation from video images, working with the OpenCV library
  • Recognition of the selected parts of images
  • Quality control of the project. Review-architects
  • Project management and process management: theory, practice, tools
  • The TI DaVinci DSP-processor for “dummies”

Students will also become familiar with the criteria for assessing the quality of work for project managers, quality assurance specialists, technical writers, programmers and architects.

It is not the first Promwad’s collaboration experience with the Belarusian State University, the leading educational institution of the country. In the last academic year, the company's specialists worked with the third year students in the BSU within their course “Linux Kernel Programming”, which was designed to arouse interest of the future software developers in open source technologies.

The Promwad’s experts will present their reports within the theoretical conference tracks. They will tell about low-power processor modules and controllers for the development of mobile devices:

The ARM-Event 2013 participants also will learn various aspects of the electronics development based on the TI’s components and technical solutions. In August 2013, Promwad Innovation Company successfully certified its quality management system in accordance with the international standard ISO 9001:2008 in respect of software development and testing.

The audit was conducted by the Certification Association “Russian Register”. It is a member of IQNet and a recognized Russian leader in independent certification of management systems, products and personnel.

Promwad’s experts have been actively developing the company management system for several years. They restructured some departments, optimized internal business processes, and based all the activities on the principle of continuous quality improvement. The heads of Promwad’s divisions and departments studied the requirements of the international standard ISO 9001:2008.

The work in this direction has resulted in the obtaining of the certificate that ensures that Promwad’s customers consistently receive high-quality services in software development and testing applications for electronics devices.

HiFi Audio board for Beaglebone is an extension board with multi-function audio interface that allows to create a high-quality audio player based on popular Beaglebone single board computer.

STBs on Android and Amlogic are the STB prototypes based on Amlogic processors line, which are specially designed for the development of "smart" STBs with functionality of a tablet computer (video games support, internet access, etc.).

Processor modules for various applications:

System on Module based on DM3730 processor from Texas Instruments (SODIMM-200 form factor) for multimedia applications. The use of this module helps to reduce time, costs and risks during new products introduction. The DM3730 processor is energy-efficient, has rich capabilities for playback and recording of multimedia streams and supports OpenGL ES 3D-graphic as well as 1080p HD video.

Promwad team becomes one of the first ARM Accredited Engineers in the CIS

Promwad’s team of programming engineers has successfully passed an exam for the ARM Accredited Engineer (AAE) certification program. Today it is the only certification program available in the system of evaluating engineers who work with processors based on ARM architecture.

Promwad’s team of programming engineers has successfully passed an exam for the ARM Accredited Engineer (AAE) certification program. Today it is the only certification program available in the system of evaluating engineers who work with processors based on ARM architecture.

ARM Holdings, based in Britain, launched its certification program in 2012, selecting twelve different fields to evaluate engineers from beginner to expert level, some of which will be available for the exam this year.

AAE is an entry level certificate which covers the software aspects of ARMv7 architecture and focuses on the processors Cortex-A and Cortex-R (additionally it covers general subjects such as programming tools). The AAE certification program is designed for developers of embedded systems and embedded software, which have extensive knowledge in ARM technology and make use of real-time and application processors in their projects.

]]>The entry-level exam syllabus]]> for ARM Accredited Engineer certification includes the following sections:

  • Architectural (30%)
  • Software Development (30%)
  • Software Optimization (15%)
  • System (10%)
  • Software Debug (8%)
  • Implementation (7%)

The certification exam is carried out by Prometric, a well-known American company which evaluates the knowledge of experts on the criteria of educational systems by a number of global technology vendors such as Apple, Microsoft, IBM and other companies. Promwad experts are ready to prove their knowledge of ARM architecture at Advanced and Specialist levels as soon as these exams are available in certification centers.

ARM Accredited Engineer certification is not a requirement for working on projects using ARM, but this certificate is an added advantage and demonstrates the high qualifications of Promwad engineers, which helps deal with customers’ tasks using top world-class solutions: computing architecture big.LITTLE, multi-core ARMv7 and Cortex-A9 processors, etc.

LVEE 2013: results. Promwad is a traditional sponsor and participant

From 27 to 30 June, the 9th International Linux Vacation / Eastern Europe 2013 conference took place near Grodno (Belarus). At about 30 reports and workshops were presented during the event, which gathered active representatives of the Open Source community from Belarus, Russia, Poland, Estonia and Finland.

At about 30 reports and workshops were presented during the event, which gathered active representatives of the Open Source community from Belarus, Russia, Poland, Estonia and Finland.

Promwad traditionally sponsored LVEE and participated at the conference. This year, we presented the following reports:

  • Anton Mikanovich "Network devices control via TR-069" — an overview presentation on the TR-069 open standard used to provide centralized remote management of subscriber devices (routers, modems, VoIP-phones, IPTV STB, etc.)
     
  • Andrei Pushkin "Course on the Linux kernel programming at BSU" — presentation of the educational program, which Promwad’s experts conducted at the Belarusian State University, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The course was designed for third-year students and aimed at increasing interest in the field of Open Source software

Among the most popular 2013 LVEE topics it is worth mentioning databases and their use, Linux multimedia features, educational programs in universities, programming languages, the problems of Open Source project support, and other interesting issues.

The conference was held at a cozy camping site on the shore of White Lake and brought together more than 160 people. According to the organizers and participants, the level of LVEE 2013 reports was high, and the accompanying informal chat was sincere.

Promwad granted a special prize for the best report of the conference — PocketBook e-book under the Linux operating system.

Electronic Design Magazine publishes our article about OpenMCAPI

The US-based Electronic Design magazine has published the article by our programmer Ruslan Filipovich “Porting OpenMCAPI For Multicore Communications”. The author introduced the reader to the open software library OpenMCAPI to ensure inter-core data exchange.

The US-based Electronic Design magazine has published the article by our programmer Ruslan Filipovich “Porting OpenMCAPI For Multicore Communications”. The author introduced the reader to the open software library OpenMCAPI to ensure inter-core data exchange.

This is a common practice in embedded systems development to install different operating systems on multicore systems-on-chip. For example, some projects require running Linux and RTOS (real-time system). This task can be fulfilled by using shared memory and inter-core interruptions; a programmer usually writes a special interaction interlayer and ports it to different systems.

In his article, Ruslan explains why the OpenMCAPI library is an excellent implementation of the MCAPI specification, and he publishes an example of code for porting this library to the RTEMS real-time system.

Promwad rebranding: growth influenced company style

Promwad, the largest independent electronics design center in the CIS region, has done rebranding. Over ten years of intense growth and development in the electronics and IT market, major changes have been introduced to the company, that are reflected in the company’s corporate identity: now Promwad has a new logo and corporate website, which are designed to increase brand recognizability and demonstrate its new content.

Out of a simple team of engineers and programmers Promwad has grown into an independent design center which provides a full range of services for electronics design, from concept generation to launching the product into mass production in a specified spot of the world. Today Promwad is not just contract development of electronics and embedded software. The company also invests in designing hardware and software platforms (OEM solutions) for the developing market sectors, which it then offers to its customers on various conditions, from licensing to full sale. This business model will enable potential customers to accelerate the implementation of projects, as well as reduce the final cost and time-to-market for a new electronic product.

Roman Pakholkov, CEO and founder of Promwad, explains, “Rebranding is a very important step in the company’s history. It is associated not only with a new external presentation, but also with internal changes. The new basis for Promwad’s development has been a transition to a divisional business structure which will help implement adaptive management and focus on improving the labor productivity of each expert”.

Three divisions have now been formed within the company, which specialize in various projects: electronics design, launching into production and mobile applications development. Promwad’s personnel has grown to over a hundred employees who have implemented more than 200 projects in the field of contract development. Thus, the company offers a full array of services for the electronics and IT market, which enables it to break away from competitors.

Roman Pakholkov continues, “We have changed from technological positioning to industry positioning. Initially, our focus was on the design of electronics based on Linux and SoCs (system-on-chip), but now our goal is to become a major industry player in such niches as consumer electronics, telecommunications, automation and automotive electronics. To do this, we maintain a special focus on working with multinational companies, industry and technology leaders, as well as ambitious startups. Over the first ten years in the market for electronics, we have already been recognized in Russia as a leading design house. Now we are pursuing this goal on the world arena”.

Promwad Mobile team presented its project at AngelHack Moscow

From 18 to 19 May, ]]>Promwad Mobile]]> team took part in the first and the world's largest AngelHack Hackathon in Moscow. The event brought together more than 250 programming specialist, designers and entrepreneurs from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other countries. Within two days of continuous work the participants created more than 50 prototypes — new applications for mobile devices.

The event brought together more than 250 programming specialist, designers and entrepreneurs from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other countries. Within two days of continuous work the participants created more than 50 prototypes — new applications for mobile devices.

AngelHack Moscow was supported by Google, PayPal, Yammer, Paymill, Apps4All, SocialMart, and MSU business incubator. On the first day of the event, the representatives of IT companies appeared, they talked about the open data, the prospects for the PayPal use in mobile applications and the mobile development trends in the world market.

On May 19, the review of the designs developed took place; the developers were given a 2 minute presentation as a part of the 4-hour pitch-section. The Promwad Mobile team introduced a mobile application based on augmented reality technology. It displays the contents of a closed box with any products in the form of 3D-model. This way the user can get full information about the hidden object without removing it from the packaging. The design concept can be used to implement applications in various fields.

Lapka and Promwad designed mini laboratory for iPhone

By order of startup Lapka we developed enclosure design and launched into production a set of five sensors for the iPhone. The devices are designed for measuring the level of radiation, humidity, electromagnetic radiation and nitrates in foodstuffs.

By order of startup Lapka we developed enclosure design and launched into production a set of five sensors for the iPhone. The devices are designed for measuring the level of radiation, humidity, electromagnetic radiation and nitrates in foodstuffs.

Lapka sensors are connected to the Apple smartphones via audio jack, use iPhone battery and CPU, take measurements and display the results in the interface of specific iOS applications.

In frames of the project Promwad fulfilled the following tasks:    

  1. Selection of materials for the enclosure. Dozens of wood, plastic and metal samples were investigated. The analysis helped to select the best combination: dark hardwood (no cover), ivory plastic and stainless steel. The customer was able to check all the materials due to prototypes: to evaluate the color, tactile feel, weight, and other parameters.   
  2. Development of all components design: 3D-modeling and design documentation for mass production.    
  3. Production of equipment (a set of molds) for series production.    
  4. Release of the initial batch of parts for the sensors.

The successful combination of materials and modern design solution resulted in the external view of the new development. Lapka device looks as stylish talismans that protect from the harmful effects of the environment. It differs from other measuring devices. Production Company Altonika is the largest contract manufacturer of electronics in Russia with the output volume of more than 4.5 million units per year to 600 kinds of products.
