Promwad Creates a Video Recorder Prototype for Recording in JPEG2000 Format

Promwad creates a working prototype of video recorder for recording in JPEG2000 format on the basis of Analog Devices BF533 EZ-KIT Lite under Linux OS

The prototype allows recording video data in Motion JPEF2000 format to USB Flash-drive. Promwad specialists chose Motion JPEG2000 as an algorithm for compressing video data because it has the following advantages:

  • High level and quality of compression
  • Noise immunity
  • Possibility to change image resolution with minimum efforts by applying wavelet technology
  • Absence of frame-to-frame connections, which allows selecting separate frames from a video stream without additional processing

Linux uClinux-dist is used as the basis of controlling software, supplied in source code for further assembly and oriented to embedded systems. uClinux-dist allows creating various assembly profiles, easily integrating new components and configuring the assembly of third-party components in detail.

To control JPEG2000 hardware compression Promwad developed ADV202 driver representing v4l2 (Video for Linux Two) interface, by using which user application can capture compressed JPEG2000 stream, adjust brightness, saturation and contrast parameters via ADV7183B ADC video driver.

Besides, Promwad developed a program module capable of saving frames, received from ADV202, into a video stream. Moreover, special information is written to metadata of JPEG2000 frame. The received data is saved as avi files in AVI container. Video in Motion JPEG2000 format doesn't have frame-to-frame connections, which allowed implementing the function of retrieving frames from the archive with a user-defined sequence.

Promwad specialists created this working prototype by order of Russian company - developer and manufacturer of small scale systems for digital recording of audio and video information.

Promwad's emphasis on application of Embedded Linux once again proved its efficiency and reliability in regard to embedded systems. The completed project is another successful example of creating a quality product that meets conditions of high technologies market on a tight schedule.
