CSTB-2009: Promwad’s Report on Exhibition and Conference
|
On 2-5 February the annual International Exhibition and Conference CSTB-2009 was held in International Exhibition Center “Crocus Expo” (Moscow, Russia). This event is the main event in the industry of television and telecommunications in Russian and CIS-countries. More than 350 companies from 25 countries – representatives of leading companies of modern market of media-technologies and systems – participated in this event.
During the event Promwad representatives held talks with a range of companies engaged in developing solutions for set-top boxes. Basing on achievements, presented at the exhibition, they also performed an analysis of the current situation of domestic media-market.
So, companies that participated in CSTB-2009 can be split into the following categories: 1) TV-channel content providers; 2) Equipment manufacturers; 3) Chip makers.
For Promwad Innovation Company, as an electronics design center, companies of the third category were of main interest, and especially chip makers for STBs. In this industry only four companies were exhibited at the exhibition – NEC, NXP, Fujitsu and STMicroelectronics.
NXP actively advertised its DVB-T solution on the basis of PNX8732 processor, TD1311 tuner and TDA10048 demodulator for Standard Definition systems, and also DVB-T solution for High Definition systems on the basis of PNX8735 processor, TDA18211HD tuner and TDA10048 demodulator.
Fujitsu, in its turn, presented MB86H01 SmartMPEG-M System-on-Chip on the basis of ARC Tangent-A4 processor core for set-top boxes with support of Standard Definition (SD). Besides that, Fujitsu exhibited MB86H60 integrated processor on the basis of ARM 1176JZF-S 324 MHz processor core for High Definition (HDTV) systems.
The stands of NEC Electronics displayed Systems-on-Chip from EMMA2 model range for SD and HD set-top box solutions.
STMicroelectronics exhibited chip sets for set-top boxes for satellite, channel and on-air digital television (DVB-S, DVB-C, DVB-T) with support of Standard Definition (SD) - STi5202, STi5205, and also chip sets with support of High Definition (HD) - STi7101, STi7105, STi7200.
Talking about set-top boxes, represented at the exhibition, it is interesting to note that most part of them were based on solutions provided by STMicroelectronics. This company is apparently the leader today in the sphere of manufacturing specialized schematics for TV set-stop boxes for on-air (DVB-T) and satellite (DVB-S) digital television. The results of the participation in the exhibition proved once again the success of the company and its leading positions in the market of chip-makers for client digital TV devices.
Apart from new products in the sphere of chips for telecommunications, it is worth mentioning original solutions from equipment manufacturers. C&T Group presented an interesting from the technical point of view Dolphin remote control, which is connected to TV-set via 2.44 GHz radio channel. This device has accelerometers, which allow controlling the cursor on TV screen by moving and rotating the remote control. Such solution significantly expands the capabilities of a TV-set by adding a friendly interface to such interactive applications as drawing, games, menu controls and others.
In addition to visiting stands and studying the presented novelties, guests and participants of the event could also listen to the reports at International Conference CSTB, held at the same time with the exhibition. The main focus of attention for reporters were questions about deployment of digital technologies, development of satellite and channel television, application of wireless TV-technologies, High-Definition television (HDTV and IPTV) and others.
It is necessary to note particularly the report delivered by Artsem Kudriavtsev (CTV CEO) for the breadth of coverage on the topic of prospects and problems of development of digital television, internet television and mobile television in Russia. The presenter performed an analysis of domestic media-market, which revealed main reasons hampering constructional growth of companies and services in this sphere. The results shown by Artsem Kudriavtsev provoked keen interest among the audience.
On the whole, Exhibition and Conference CSTB-2009, judging by the composition of participants and stated topics, fully matches its name and purpose – to unite key players of the telecommunication and television market and present most progressive formats and directions in this sphere. At the same time we would like to advise the organizers of the event to pay more attention to the level of representation of companies-vendors (manufacturers of equipment and chip makers) at the exhibition. |
