Outcomes of Embedded Systems Conference’2009, Moscow

Electronics Design Center Promwad has joined the 2nd Embedded Systems Conference held in Moscow on December 3, 2009. One of the key issues of the conference was technology and tools for “smart” homes and intelligent buildings management.

Therefore Promwad’s embedded design engineer Sergei Kovalev presented a report on the practical development of multimedia controller device for "smart" home. (Presentation material is available here>>)

This project was developed for the European company specialized in automation solutions for "smart" home industry. Custom designed by Promwad, this device allows you to control home multi-media complex (home theater, tuner, video and other multimedia equipment). It operates due to HDMI-interface and communicates with the equipment through Ethernet using a personal computer and / or other devices connected to the local network. The device is able to configure easily and be integrated into a home control complex. The result of the development stage was in creating an original hardware platform, software design bring-up, and customization of enclosure design. Finally the original compact and pretty low-cost product was created.

This project is not the only one in the field of digital design solutions for multimedia designed by Promwad. In company’s portfolio there is a portable wireless remote control "intelligent" home device, equipped with a touch screen. There is also a product line of networking audio players for playing back custom digital media content. The most popular among the last projects are digital set-top box products designed for transmitting digital TV signal to analog receivers.

The participants of the conference were also interested in general issues of embedded systems (security, reliability). In the plenary part of the conference Eugeny Andreyev from "Embedded Systems" magazine has presented a report with analyses of existing approaches to the classification of embedded systems on the basis of their application. The problem of security criteria of embedded systems was noted in the report of Alexei Demyanov (ADV Systems).

To sum up, Embedded System conference was attended by over 80 representatives from distribution companies and electronics design houses. This number didn’t live up the expectations of organizing committee. By the way, according to some participants, the conference showed only the tip of the iceberg promoting popular solutions provided by world known electronic components’ vendors and distributors instead of demonstrating original solutions from local electronics design companies thus making the forum less attractive and useful for the audience.
